JOHN ANTHONY FERTIG

MARY N.
wife of JOHN FERTIG
Born Jan. 11, 1794
Died Jan. 21, 1863
Aged 69 y. 10 d.

Johann Anton Förtig (John Anthony Fertig) was born and baptized on June 17, 1771 in the Catholic Parish of Kirchzell (most likely in the town of Watterbach), Bavaria, Germany1,2,3,4,5,6.  He was the son of Sebastian Förtig and Barbara Schorck of Watterbach, which is located approximately seven miles southwest of Miltenberg in northwestern Bavaria1.

On November 24, 1807, John Anthony was united in marriage to Maria Anna Bachmann of Wiesenthal, Bavaria, in the Weilbach Parish2,5.  Maria Anna was born on May 7, 1786 and was already a widow at the age of 21, at the time of her marriage to John Anthony7.  Most likely around this time, John Anthony relocated and became a resident and cottager in the village of Ohrnbach, Bavaria, which is located approximately six miles west of Miltenberg1,2,3.  John Anthony and Maria Anna were blessed with two sons together: Anthony and Adam Joseph 4,5,6.  Less than three months after the birth of Adam Joseph, Maria Anna departed this life on March 8, 1812, at the age of only 257.

Approximately four months later, John Anthony remarried Maria Nothburga (Mary Anna Nothburga) Schwaninger on July 7, 1812 in the chapel of Ohrnbach3 Mary Anna Nothburga was born on January 11, 1794 in Bavaria8,9.  She was the daughter of Joseph Schwaninger, resident of Ohrnbach and Anna Margaretha Grimm of Weckbach, Bavaria3.  John Anthony and Mary Anna Nothburga begat three additional children: Mary Anne, Franz Mathaeus (Francis Matthew) and Johann Joseph (John Joseph)4,6.

In 1837, John Anthony's family of seven departed from their hometown of Ohrnbach to immigrate to America.  The family packed all of their possessions into one chest and one bag4.  They traveled north approximately 320 miles to the port at Bremen, Germany4.

The family then boarded the newly constructed Clementine and set sail for America, on an approximate 3,800 mile journey4.  This transatlantic voyage presumably took approximately 42 days to complete.  However, depending on weather conditions, the passage could have varied between 25 to 80 days in transit.

The ship arrived at the Port of New York on September 14, 18374.  The passenger ship manifest indicated that the family had changed the spelling of their name from Förtig to Fertig4.  The son, Anthony, was not content with the city and he immediately sailed back to Europe6.  The remaining family members traveled approximately 170 miles west and settled in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania10,11,12,13.

In 1850, Mary Anna Nothburga was recorded as residing with her daughter, Mary Anne Kramer's family in Lower Augusta Township, Northumberland County13.  John Anthony had presumably passed away sometime between 1837 to 18504,13. His burial location is unknown.

Within the next ten years, Mary Anna Nothburga moved in with the family of her son, John Joseph Fertig, in Monroe Township, Snyder County9.  Several years later, Mary Anna passed away at the age of 69 on January 21, 18638.  Her body was laid to rest at the Shreiner's Cemetery, west of Shamokin Dam in Snyder County8.
