Francis
"Frank" Ferdig was born in 1848 or 1849, the second son of Francis Matthew and Matilda Fertig/Ferdig1,2.
He was raised in Rush Township, Northumberland
County and Monroe Township, Snyder County1,2. Francis
began farming at a young age and continued as a farmer his entire life2,3.
Francis
was united in marriage with Sophia M. Long, the daughter of Daniel Long and Sophia Doebler3.
Sophia was born on November 6, 18504. Francis's brother,
John Ferdig, married Mary A. Long, a sister of Sophia.
Francis and Sophia
were honored and blessed with three children: Lydia, Calvin Oscar and George Franklin3.
By 1880, the family had relocated to
Salem Township, Ottawa County, Ohio3.
Francis
later moved his family out to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he passed away
sometime prior to 19005,6.
Sophia then brought the
remaining family back to Monroe Township to reside5.
As a widow, Sophia worked as a nurse to provide for her family5.
She resided with her sister, Mary Ferdig and mother, Sophia Long5,7.
Sophia died at the age of 64 on January
13, 19154. She was buried in
the Shreiner's Cemetery, west of Shamokin Dam4.
