Notes for Josef Fertich,

Josef Fertich, Jr. and
his family decided to immigrate to North America. Josef temporarily left
his wife, Elizabeth and two young sons behind as he departed from Hungary
on August 11, 1902. He traveled aboard the S.S. Friedrich Der Grosse from
Bremen, Germany and arrived at Ellis Island, New York 15 days later on
August 26, 1902.
Josef was a barber by
trade and worked in the New York area for several months while he learned
English. As a barber in Hungary, Josef was also a bonesetter, a tooth
puller and bloodletter and he brought some of the instruments for these
practices when he emigrated.
Josef then decided to
relocate to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where some of the families from
Zichydorf had settled. Shortly after, his wife, Elizabeth, and his two
sons, Josef and Matt, also immigrated to Canada. They departed from
Hamburg, Germany on April 21, 1903 aboard the S.S. Adria and arrived at
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on May 4, 1903. They traveled to Winnipeg to
reunite the family after an approximately eight month absence.
The Fertich family lived
in Winnipeg for a few years and their daughter Anna was born there. They
then relocated to the Rockglen, Saskatchewan area, where Josef took up a
homestead as well as continued in the barber trade. In the early days,
there was no doctor in Rockglen and Josef often set broken bones or
splinted them until the patient could be moved to the closest doctor in
Willow Bunch. Later, Josef owned a liquor store in Rockglen as well as
continuing work on his farm.

Matthias "Matt"6 Fertich (Josef5, Josef4,
Christof3, Anton2, Josef1) was born April
11, 1897 in Zichydorf, and died June 14, 1959 in Trail, BC. He married
Theresa Margaret "Tessie" Brehm January 1922 in Rouleau, SK, daughter
of Michael Brehm and Kathryn Gessel. She was born January 16, 1900 in
Kmijanen, and died November 12, 1965 in Vancouver, BC.
Notes for Matthias "Matt"
Fertich:
Matt was a hard working
farmer in the Rockglen area, Saskatchewan, until the drought forced him to
pursue other endeavors. In 1938, the family moved to British Columbia.
Matt worked a short time on a dam construction site on the Kootenay River
where West Kootenay Power and Light was building several large
hydroelectric power generating plants.
Matt later got a job with
CM&S and worked in their machine shop operating a lathe. He was injured by
some noxious gas that damaged his throat and he worked his final years in
maintenance.
Matt had a great sense of
humor and was always joking around. He played the accordion at a lot of
dances, barn dances and parties. He also played the piano and violin by
ear. A heart attack was what claimed Matt's life at age 62.

PROBABLE ANCESTRY
OF THE FERTICH FAMILY:
The Fertich family of
Canada has been traced back to Josef Fertich, who married Katharina
Orban in Lovrin, Hungary in February 1796. In addition to Josef
Fertich, there were only two other separate Fertich families recorded in
the Lovrin Catholic Church records from 1777 to 1840.
The first Fertich family recorded in the
Lovrin records was Johann Fertich and his wife, Susanna. Johann was born
circa 1717 and died on April 19, 1819 in Lovrin at the age of 102. His
wife, Susanna was born circa 1741 and died October 24, 1795 in Lovrin.
They had one recorded child, Eva Fertich, who was born on March 1, 1785 in
Lovrin.
The other recorded Fertich family was
Elizabeth Fertich, who married Nikolaus Ernst on November 16, 1802 in
Lovrin. Nikolaus and Elizabeth had eight children born between 1803 and
1825, which were recorded in the church records.
It cannot be proven with
the available data, but it is the writer’s opinion that Johann Fertich
is the father of Josef and that Elizabeth Fertich is the sister of
Josef. There were several considerations that led the author to reach
this conclusion.
First, Johann Fertich
was the only other male Fertich listed in the available Lovrin records.
Also, Johann was one generation older than Josef and therefore capable
of being his father.
Johann was born circa
1717 and his wife Susanna was born around 1741. In comparison, Josef
was already widowed and remarried by 1796. Assuming Josef was at least
20 years old at his marriage in 1796, he would have been born prior to
1776. Susanna would have been 35 years old at most at the time of
Josef’s birth, which confirms that Johann and Susanna were capable of
being of sufficient age to be the parents of Josef.
Next, Elizabeth Fertich was married in 1802 and had her
first child the following year. In comparison, Josef
Fertich was married and had his first
recorded child in 1796. Since Josef and Elizabeth were presumably of
the same approximate age, the author believes that it is probable that
they were siblings.
It is important to note
that the village of Lovrin was not inhabited by Germans until 1780 and
1784. Therefore, Johann, Josef and Elizabeth Fertich all relocated to
settle in Lovin. In the writer’s opinion, it is unlikely that three
unrelated Fertich families would all settle in Lovrin around the same
time. It is most probable that Johann relocated to Lovrin with his wife
Susanna and children, which likely included Josef and Elizabeth.
In order to verify this
conclusion, the birth records for Josef and Elizabeth would have to be
obtained from the village in which they resided prior to reaching Lovrin.
Unfortunately, the marriage records for both Josef and Elizabeth
Fertich, which were obtained, do not contain the names of their
parents.
Additional information regarding Johann
Fertich was obtained from a publication entitled Sammelwerk
donauschwäbischer Kolonisten, written by Stefan Stader. Mr. Stader
recorded the following information: Entry 11762, Johann Fertig, born
about 1717, from Bischbrunn, NW of Marktheidenfeld, Unter Franken, died
19.4.1819 in Lovrin/Banat. Note that Mr. Stader referenced the following
source for his entry: Heimatbuch der Heidegemeinde Lovrin-Lowrin im Banat,
by Anton-Peter Petri.
Therefore, it is probable that the
Fertich family of Canada descended from Johann Fertich, native of
Bischbrunn, Bavaria, Germany.
Bischbrunn is located in the province of Unterfranken, in the northwestern
corner of the state of Bavaria. Bischbrunn is located only approximately
30 kilometers Northeast of Amorbach, Bavaria, which is the original region
of the Fertig / Fertich / Förtig families.
